The Greek architect Katsaros designed the museum which was established in 1874. Two rooms were added to initial central building in 1930s.
The Danish architect Christiansen Hansen attributed the new design of the museum.
The museum contains; Roman sculptures, small objects from sanctuaries at Sparta, mosaics, Laconian reliefs, inscribed stella from the temple of Artemis Orthia, prehistoric collections.
